Ancient Coins of Cleopatra VII of Egypt. 51-29 BC
YES, THE FAMOUS ONE.
Queen Cleopatra VII Philapator, Last of the Ptolemies, Greek Rulers of Egypt. Wonderful bronze coins bearing her portrait! Dispite her depictions in films and other popular culture, these coins depict the true nature of what the famous Queen Cleopatra of legend really looked like. These are extremely rare, particularly with nice portraits like these!

Cleopatra of Egypt, Large Bronze Coin, As She Actually Looked!

Cleopatra VII Thea Neotera, 50 - 31 BC. Nice and large bronze 80-drachmae obol. Minted at Alexandria, Egypt.
Her draped bust right, hair in bun / Eagle standing left on thunder-bolt, KLEOPATRA BASILEWS, double cornucopia and
mark of value Π to right. 26.5mm, 18.28 g. Ref: Svoronos 1871; SNG Copenhagen 419–21. Brown surfaces. Fine, brown patina.
From the collection of a Texas Wine Doctor, purchased from Paul Rynearson; ex CNG. #CE2085: $1500
SOLD

This was the true Cleopatra, flaws and all, a far cry from the glamorized version seen in film and TV!
Fine contemporary depictions such as this are very difficult to come by.

Incredible Countermark of Cleopatra!
Antioch, Seleucis & Pieria, struck c. 90-89 BC. Heavy bronze AE22 coin. Originally depicted laureate head of Zeus right / Zeus enthroned left with Nike and sceptre, ANTIOXEWN THS MHTROPOLEWN KAI AYTONOMOY. Struck with a crisp countermark depicting the head of Cleopatra during her reign (c. 51-29 BC), thereby claiming 'ownership' of it as legal tender in her Egypt. It was used to mark coins circulating in the Syro-Phoenician territories which were given to her by Mark Antony. 22 mm, 10.55 g. with beautiful olive-green patina. Ex-Savoca Numismatik GmbH, Munchen, Germany. I seriously considered keeping this one for my own collection! #CE2067: $375

  • Cleopatra is always newsworthy. So when in February 2007 a small coin in the collection of the Society of Antiquaries of Newcastle was said to have changed our understanding of her, it made headlines around the world.

Republic of Egypt (1953-1958)

Cleopatra came to power after a failed reign that was the legacy of her father. She made many smart and difficult decisions which won the respect of many. Unfortunately, one of these decisions was to use base materials for her coins which are the reason so few exist to this day.
